THE LIFE OF THE ARTISTS 2020
I pulled up in a Lyft
Larry was outside smoking.
We went up together, the V-Point building in Northern Virginia.
I brought my guitar, to play, I had plans to lay down 4 songs.
Yes ambitious was I for a dinner I was 3 hours late
It was great to see Shisha and Larry
We had a nice appetizer spread.
Our seating in their new living room was pleasant, very sophisticated and warm, 2 baths and living room flush with books, records, wooden furniture and mirrors, and an off- set room filled with wires and instruments: Larry’s music studio.
Our conversation fluid, Larry excused himself a couple of times to go and smoke.
We listened to Larry’s new album, I found 2 of the songs quite ready for radio.
I commented “this is the sound of the 2020’s” the real sound. Our music;
the music we are creating is the real sound of this generation! Only hid, hid from everyone as if the sound is silence not one note heard.
All you hear is regurgitation manufactured “hit” songs given to old artists from the last decade to sing on the radio pushed up by a circle of old white men who deem themselves the ‘all makers of music’ deciding who wins at the Grammys.
This, as millions upon millions of souls out there singing their hearts out to be different, to be heard to be known.
All are quiet until you put a on a Soundcloud page or a modern Vinyl.
They too will be unheard until word of mouth or a friend of a friend may play.
Overall, it will stay, within the confounds of the DMV, DC, Virginia, Maryland.
Let’s play the music of this generation from artists pushing 50 years old, worth a lifetime of work unsold.
Nevertheless, they charge on through passion, through angst, through depression, through poverty, only to come out the other side as Artists, in their own mind.
What do they have to tell from a life time of bled fingers, closets full of boxes of CD’s and unopened Vinyls of their music unheard?
Alone they play, not for you, not for me, but for themselves, giving in to creativity.
And for it the world is a better place
