MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME

My old Kentucky home,

Of my formative years between 3-7

Remembering rolling hills filled with Blue Grass

And horse farms with black fences that stretched for miles

Every year my parents would attend the Kentucky Derby

Sipping on Kentucky Bourbon and Mint Julips

Horses running all day with people dressed in bright apparel and beautiful hats.

Midnight Bourbon, Essential Quality, Medina Spirit are my picks

Old lucky number 7 I always rooted for since I was 6.

Watching Steamboat Races atop hills on properties of old mansions

The Belle of Louisville against the Delta Queen, always our favorite was the Belle.

Riding in fields washed with grass so green it appeared blue

Kind people and rolling hills,

Our house was on a circle in the middle a great mound,

Filled with dandelions blooming,

To blow off their white tips was always a favorite pastime of my brother and I.

Riding to the bank with Mrs. Fitz in her big yellow Cadillac,

Our neighbor we were so fond, played the piano by ear

Always filled us with cheer.

Her happy Spirit I remember to this day,

But then we moved far away...

Back to DC, the land of politics and tricks.

I’ll always remember my childhood days of Kentucky living,

Swimming in the pool and outside dinner grilling

For we only have one chance to grow up,

And mine was filled with horses, and I like that
